Central Africa Conflict Prevention Association (CACOPA)

Type of Organization: Non-governmental - Non-Profit

Home Country: Congo (Democratic Republic)

Overview

CACOPA is a non partisan and non-profit organization of professional with multiples skills and experience in providing effective conflict resolution, conflict prevention, peacemaking, peace education, decision making assistance, good governance and dispute resolution consultancy. We provide services domestically and internationally. Number of staff members: 12

CACOPA is dedicated to the promotion of the culture of peace through empowering communities to foster development

With respect to Higher Education activities, most the CACOPA members have Master Degree in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies. They have been appointed lecturers at newly created Roman Catholic Institution for Peace Education in Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Institution is higher education from undergraduate to honors. Aside the modules, CACOPA members are also facilitators in different trainings: Basic, Advanced and training for trainers Conflict Management, Alternative to Violent Project, Conflict Resolution workshop and Seminars…

I can say that there is no specific curriculum for Peace Education for the Democratic Republic of Congo. We are applying our modules to the realities of the country, the continent and the world. The Institution where we are teaching is the first for peace education. There is no specific documentation in French for Peace Education at the higher level. We are trying to translate the different readings to organize our modules. Currently, we are trying to get the government involved the Peace Programme.

We would like to train teachers at the Primary, secondary in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution so that they can be able to teach peace to their students. At the university level, we like to introduce some modules and maybe to create a department of Peace so that the country will have expertise in peace research. At the other hand, we would like to create a center of conflict resolution which can help the country to do some research and why not help the country to solve problems.
