Free Spanish Language Peer Mediation Manual and Training Video

The New York City-based Washington Heights-Inwood Coalition received a JAMS Foundation grant to develop a Spanish language school peer mediation manual and video of a simulated peer mediation session in Spanish, to be use nationally for those programs who may find it useful. These materials are now available for free from their website. The manual, entitled Manual de Mediación Escolar – Entrenamiento Integrado Para Estudiantes De Escuelas Secundarias is 152-pages long, and the video runs a little over 20 minutes.

NAFCM to release free Peer Mediation Curriculum for Grades 6-8

At the September 2012 Association for Conflict Resolution conference in New Orleans, the National Association for Community Mediation announced the pending release of a new free peer mediation school curriculum for grades 6-8. The complete Curriculum package contains 1) a program implementation guide, 2) an interactive online trainer’s course (for fee), 3) a helpful training DVD, 4) a thorough trainer’s manual, 5) a student workbook containing over 100 skill-building activities, and 6) a helpful website that will host a growing list of supplemental resources.

The project is being coordinated by the National Association for Community Mediation (NAFCM) and the Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center, with support from the JAMS foundation.

Conflict Resolution Education iPad App Builds on CRE Activity Calendar tradition webmaster Bill Warters has developed a new iPad App that provides a great way to browse the field of conflict resolution in education and find ideas for activities you might use in your teaching or training. It provides a new way to access many of the activities featured in our annual CRE wall calendar from the convenience of your iPad.

The app, available at no cost via the itunes store, helps promote conflict resolution in educational settings by providing a rich collection of resources and suggested learning activities for use throughout the year. Built around a calendar filled with historical and international information of interest to educators, the app provides interactive timelines, word search activities, inspirational quotes, videos and other full-text resources for educators and parents interested in teaching peaceful means of resolving conflict.

Evidence-Based, Nonpunitive Alternatives To Zero Tolerance

A March 2011 research brief by Child Trends entitled “Multiple Responses, Promising Results: Evidence-Based, Nonpunitive Alternatives To Zero Tolerance,” suggests that zero tolerance school discipline policies have not been proven effective by research and may have negative effects, making students more likely to drop out and less likely to graduate on time. Instead, the brief recommends the use of nonpunitive disciplinary action, such as behavior interventions, social skills classes, and character education.

Peer Mediation Video Clips from the BBC

The BBC has a large collection of educational video clips, and some of them are of special interest to readers of this blog. A video presenting peer mediation to 5th grade students was clipped to create a few shortened learning videos that might be used in teaching. You can see all three of them via this link.

Getting to Know You – Classroom Activities for Starting Off the School Year from Morningside Center

As a new school year begins, teachers and students renew relationships after the long summer break, see new faces, and establish their routines for the year. The activities in this nice packet from the Morningside Center are designed to help you get the year off to a good start by engaging you and your students in getting to know each other, practicing listening skills, and discussing the values that will shape your classroom community.

There are separate sets of activities for grades Pre-K to 2, grades 3 to 5, and grades 6 to 12. They are adapted from exercises in the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program and the 4Rs Program (Reading, Writing, Respect & Resolution) developed by the Morningside Center.

A Good Read About SEL, Social Emotional Learning

Readers may be interested to know that the informative current issue of “Better: Evidence-based Education” magazine from Johns Hopkins University School of Education’s Center for Research and Reform in Education carries a theme about Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Looking ahead this year, the magazine focuses on what works in education concerning Implementing an SEL program (nationally and school-wide) and how to imbed solutions for SEL into school cultures. The magazine also provides articles about how societal trends can alter SEL from a broader prospective. You’ll enjoy reading the magazine which also provides a series of short article updates on latest research reports and how to access them. You can view the magazine here:

Peace One Day Educational Resources

Peace One Day (POD) is an organization that celebrates an international ceasefire on the International Day of Peace, September 21. They have developed a Global Education Resource Pack that is now available in the six official languages of the United Nations. It’s free, online (and downloadable) and includes Peace One Day short films and interviews and exercise handouts. Thirteen lessons are included in the Global Pack helping young people to explore issues of peace, non-violence, conflict resolution and intercultural cooperation, using Peace Day as a focus. POD Education materials are now reportedly being used by over 6,000 educators in over 140 countries.

Resource packs specialized to match United States and U.K. educational standards are also available, so be sure to pick the collection most relevant to your location. The U.S. and U.K packs have 21 activities included, more than the more generic Global pack that has been translated into more languages.

Check Out this Comic Book – Peace in Our Schools

Students in the Cleveland Municipal School District helped create this special comic book created by youth for youth. Through a grant from the Cleveland Foundation, children in public school classes across Cleveland came together to take a stand against violence in school and in the city. The comic book that resulted is found below. The book is part of a larger series sponsored by the Comic Book Project. Conflict Resolution Examiner

The web network of syndicated writers now has a Conflict Resolution and Character Education examiner providing stories, role-plays, articles, and lesson plans. Lots of downloadable content of interest to teachers. The author is Debbie Dunn. Dunn is a professional storyteller, published author, a Conflict Resolution Specialist, and a Certified Teacher. She taught 14 1/2 years in elementary and middle school. She tells stories and writes full-time from her home in Mosheim, TN. Find out more here.

“For the Sake of Children-Peacebuilding Storytelling Guide”

Interested in promoting the development of Peace Building in your curriculum? This online version of a book of story-based activities is now available in our CRE Resource catalog. The stories help to spark childrens imaginations to write creatively about their own understanding of peace and how they might create their own representation of having an active part in conflict resolution and the peace process. The activities in the book encourage the development, writing and sharing of stories highlighting many peace building elements such as: happy endings, win-win situations, challenges resisting stereotyping, peace within the environment and many more elements. Teachers in the U.K. have a rich resource of videos and other support materials provided by which currently celebrating their 5th Anniversary. This video on Anger Management provides a look at the challenges faced by two teaching assistants who work to manage the anger and accompanying misbehavior of some students in their school. (Note: video downloads only work if your are based in the U.K.)

Teaching for Good Behavior – free OpenLearn course materials

Readers may not be aware of the wealth of resources made available by The Open University in the United Kingdom. OpenLearn, built on the open source learning platform known as Moodle, provides lots of course materials at no cost. It is definitely worth a visit. One that might interest folks is a course known as Teaching for Good Behaviour. As the introduction explains,

The quality of our teaching inevitably has an impact on the behaviour of our students. This unit considers some of the factors that can contribute to misbehaviour in the classroom and some of the steps that we can take as teachers to re-engage students with the learning process. This unit considers the format of lessons, how lessons are delivered, how to present lesson content in an interesting and creative way, and the development of “engaging lessons”.

Additional Research on Positive Impacts of SEL For K-8 Students

This research report includes detailed information and results about a large scale study and findings from three scientific reviews involving 324, 303 children on the positive impacts of SEL for K-8 students . The report presents an overview of the 3 reviews that include: a). Interventions for the General Student Body, b). Interventions for Students with Early-Identified Problems, and c). an After-School Review: Programming for Students When the School Day Ends.
